That sounds like a great bill! I've always been concerned with vaccines and don't vaccinate my children, but am forced to vaccinate my dogs.

I cannot believe they do that! Issue a 1 or 2 year certificate when a 3 year vaccine is administered! It seems to me there's no excuse for that. Do they ever issue 3 year certificates? I've never heard of or seen one, in my state anyway.

It is unfortunate that some veterinarians issue a 1 or 2 year rabies certificate after giving a 3 year vaccine. In Minnesota, a survey by the Veterinary Medical Board indicated that the majority of veterinarians in the state did not issue a 3 year rabies certificate after administering a 3 year vaccine. (see below) Pet owners need to be vigilant & informed.

MINNESOTA: 88.8% of veterinarians responding to a rabies survey http://www.rabieschallengefund.org/i...ey_results.pdf from the Board of Veterinary Medicine indicated they give a 3 year rabies vaccine; yet 53.3% fail to give pet owners a corresponding 3 year rabies certificate (36.2% issue a 2 year certificate, 17.1% issue "other"). When asked if they inform clients when they put a different expiration date on the rabies certificate than that on the vaccine administered, 40.9% responded that they did not inform the client.

MINNESOTA Board of Veterinary Medicine issues Rabies Vaccination Guidance Document 3/1/12 http://www.vetmed.state.mn.us/portal...ceDocument.pdf (please copy & paste link into browser if it doesn't work by clicking on it)

"rabies vaccination certificate should always comply with Minnesota Rule 1705.1146, including displaying the date of vaccination and the rabies vaccine labeled duration of immunity, even if the veterinarian recommends more frequent rabies vaccination"

Rabies 'over-vaccination' targeted in Delaware by Marc Selinger, The Examiner 7/2/12 http://www.examiner.com/article/rabi...geted-delaware

"Sen. Karen Peterson, the measure’s main sponsor. “It is needed because some veterinarians tell their clients that rabies shots must be administered annually when, in fact, they are using three-year vaccines. This practice can and has resulted in the deaths of dogs who were over-vaccinated.”
