Kai Started Barking At Night

Hi guys,

I know i don't come on as much as I used to but I really need some advice.

Kai has never been a barker. In the whole 4 or so years I've had him he's been really good.

However, the last two or so weeks he has been waking up around 4am and barking. It's not a really loud consistent barking, more of a bark....stop.....bark.....stop

I am about to go into hospital to be induced tomorrow and it is completely stressing me out.

He's been sleeping in the same place for over a year now.

Anyone got any ideas?

How long does the barking go on? Just a few barks and then quiet the rest of the night? or does it go on for an extended amount of time?

When he barks, do you think its because he hears something (in or out of the house). Patchs does this once in a while (in the summer months when the windows are open at night) when she hears someone walking down our street talking on thier cell phone in the middle of the night. She also does it if she hears the paper boy at 4:30 am

The only other suggestion I have is: look for something that has changed in the enviorment. Like a new furnace/ AC Unit, appliance or so on! When I first got Neka, she barked at the refrigerator every time it started up. But she got used to it after a week or so.

Yes, check stuff. We once discovered a timer was turning a grow light for a plant on at 5AM waking our puppy. After that the plant had to wait for its light.

It could be something as simple as a computer running an antivirus scan too.

Or a neighbor's alarm clock, or someone talking on a cell phone half a mile away.

Dogs can also become hyper-vigilant when we ourselves are stressed out, or with any event happening within their household. My guess is that Kai will settle down again.

Yeah. It's just really weird. He's never been like that.

I thought it might be the nuts hitting the roof as nothing else has really changed.

He's a really good dog, but being over 41 weeks pregnant, it makes it hard to have some sleep before baby comes.

He only barks at 4am and it's just a one bark, then stop and keeps going until we go and get him.

I go into hospital tomorrow and my parents are looking after our house and dogs/cat. My dads gonna try work it out while I am away lol.

Good luck to you! Monte didn't bark in the years he was in rescue. Within months of being in my home, he found his voice. Now he's started something new - HOWLING! For no dang reason I can figure out he just breaks out in the most heart-wrenching howls now. Thank God I have no neighbors to complain...
